Nobody visits Ooty without hearing about Moddy's — 75 years of homemade chocolate, made the way it's always been made.

Our story

In December 1951, Janardhan Rao opened Modern Stores, a small retail shop in Ooty selling provisions, condiments, and specialty goods. What set it apart came almost by accident: a few cooks who had previously worked for British households in the hill station began making homemade chocolate on the side, selling it fresh to locals and the tourists passing through. The chocolate outsold everything else in the shop. Within a few years, it had a name of its own — Moddy's — and a reputation built purely on consistent quality rather than marketing. Still family-owned today, Moddy's has grown from that single Ooty counter into a full range spanning truffles, fudges, nut clusters, and sugar-free chocolate, still made with the same commitment that turned a side hustle into 75 years of Ooty's most recognisable sweet.

Moddy's Confectionary, Ooty

The origins of Modern stores can be traced back to December 15th, 1951. Established by Mr. Janardhan Rao as a small retail store in Ooty, Tami Nadu, it grew up to become a store for unique retail products, exclusive food items, and condiments. The store became popular within a short time. In due course, a few cooks who worked for the erstwhile British were engaged in making a variety of homemade chocolates and this was sold fresh to the local population and visiting tourists. Chocolates from Modern Stores became very popular within a short time and Moddy's Chocolates was firmly established as a favorite among the customers for its quality and consistent taste. After 68 years since its inception, this Family owned company based in Ooty prides itself on being one of the best Indian companies that manufacture Homemade Chocolates.
